Melissa, the mermaid, was singing one day,
As she sat on a stone in the sun and the spray,
Surrounded by listening dolphins and whales
And chubby Mer-children with glittering tails.
Her song, ringing lightly through rainbow and wave,
Was heard by King Neptune, far off in his cave.
Enchanted, he listened and nodded his head:
"This song must not vanish!" His Majesty said.
He turned to a wizard, his wisest of seers:
"Please capture this song which so pleases my ears.
Now, Wizzy, don't stand there and look like a dunce!
Invent something clever, and do it at once!"
The wizard obeyed. With his brain all awhirl,
He hurried to fashion a spiral of pearl;
And when it was finished, he eyed it with pride,
For the voice of the mermaid was singing inside.
Go look for a shell. Place it close to your ear,
And listening well, tell me what do you hear?
Once it was crisper, more thrilling, more strong,
But Melissa's soft whisper still murmurs her song!
